How Are Lab Diamonds Made?
A Modern Take on a Timeless Stone
Lab grown diamonds have become a sought-after choice for many of our clients in Atlanta and Roswell. Not only for their undeniable beauty, but for what many people feel they represent: ethical sourcing, environmental awareness, and modern innovation. While these diamonds sparkle just like their earth-mined counterparts, many people wonder how, exactly, they're created.
At Brilliant Fine + Custom, we believe in empowering our clients with knowledge, because when you understand what you're wearing, it becomes that much more meaningful. Here's an in-depth look at how lab grown diamonds are made.
What is a lab grown diamond?
Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. They are chemically, optically, and physically identical to mined diamonds. The difference lies in how they’re created. Unlike cubic zirconia or moissanite (which are diamond simulants), lab grown diamonds are made of pure crystallized carbon, just like natural diamonds. They are cut, graded, and certified using the same industry standards.
What sets Lab-Grown Diamonds apart From Natural Diamonds?
Identical Composition
Lab created diamonds share the same chemical makeup, crystal structure, and hardness as earth-mined diamonds. They offer the same fire, brilliance, and durability making them virtually indistinguishable without specialized equipment.
Different Origins
The only real difference is their beginning. Lab grown diamonds are formed above ground in a controlled laboratory using advanced technology that mimics the natural conditions in which diamonds develop deep within the Earth.
The Two Main Methods of Creating Lab Grown Diamonds
High Pressure, High Temperature
This method mimics the way natural diamonds form in the Earth’s mantle. A diamond seed is placed in carbon-rich material, then exposed to extreme pressure (up to 6 GPa) and heat (1,300–1,600°C). The carbon melts and begins to crystallize around the seed, eventually growing into a full-sized lab created diamond. This method can produce larger, high-clarity diamonds and is also used to enhance or improve the color of some lab grown diamonds.
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) starts with a thin diamond seed placed in a vacuum chamber. Carbon gases (like methane and hydrogen) are heated, breaking the carbon molecules apart. These carbon atoms settle onto the seed, layer by layer, forming a crystal clear diamond over several weeks. This method offers precise control over diamond purity, typically results in diamonds with fewer inclusions and uses lower pressure and temperature than HPHT, making it more energy efficient.
Lab grown vs mined diamonds: what’s right for you?
At Brilliant Fine + Custom, we work with both lab grown and mined diamonds, helping you choose the option that best reflects your budget, style, and values. Both lab grown and mined diamonds offer undeniable beauty and brilliance. Our lab grown diamonds have lab-grading reports, are high-quality, and virtually indistinguishable from mined diamonds, making them a modern alternative without compromising on beauty or meaning.
