Will Lab Grown Diamonds Hold Their Value?

If you're considering a lab grown diamond for your engagement ring or custom jewelry, chances are you've asked the question: Will lab grown diamonds hold their value?

It’s a fair and important consideration especially when you're making a meaningful purchase. At Brilliant Fine + Custom, we believe in being transparent with our clients across Atlanta, Roswell, and beyond. Here’s what you need to know about lab grown diamond value, and why it may not be the only factor worth weighing.

do lab grown diamonds retain their value?

While lab grown diamonds are identical to mined diamonds in chemical and physical makeup, lab grown diamonds do not retain their value like mined diamonds. Natural diamonds also don't function as long-term investments (unless your term is 100 years!). We don't encourage our clients to think of diamonds as a financial investment. In our lifetime, they are used to represent a relationship, a memory, a special time and place. Their purchase will not serve as a financial investment to anyone living now - perhaps generations to come.

Why don’t lab grown diamonds retain their value?

  1. Lower Rarity

Lab diamonds can be produced on demand, which removes the scarcity factor that contributes to the long-term market value of mined diamonds.

2. Market Shifts

As production technology becomes more efficient, prices for lab created diamonds have gradually decreased, especially over the last 5–10 years.

3. Limited Resale Demand

There is not (and will likely never be) a resale market for lab grown diamonds. See reasons 1 and 2 above.

while they differ in long-term value, lab grown diamonds still shine

  1. Ethical Origins

Unlike natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds are guaranteed conflict-free and traceable. They are also more affordable, making them an appealing alternative for those who want clarity in more ways than one.

2. Accessible Brilliance

Lab grown stones typically cost 30–70% less than mined diamonds of similar size and quality, making it easier to opt for a larger carat, higher clarity, or more intricate design within your budget.

3. Eco-Conscious Appeal

Some lab diamonds are produced with lower environmental impact, especially when renewable energy sources are used, a growing priority for couples across Atlanta and beyond.

Should you buy a lab grown diamond?

If your focus is on creating a piece that reflects your story, values, and vision, especially with an emphasis on affordability, then lab grown diamonds offer tremendous value in a different way.

At Brilliant Fine + Custom, we work closely with clients to design custom pieces using either lab created or mined diamonds, depending on what matters most to you.
